Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
About Our Team
Through our W.A.S.H. initiatives, the W.A.S.H. team aims to strengthen water and sanitation infrastructure while creating community-led advocacy and education in Vpak and Abak.
Past Projects
The WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) team at Project RISHI UCLA implemented a multifaceted hygiene initiative at Vadamanappakkam Primary School in 2024, combining hardware and software interventions to promote lasting sanitation practices. Responding to the school’s lack of soap funding, the team provided a three-month supply of liquid soap, distributed individual classroom soap bottles, and installed communal soap dispensers. They paired these with an interactive puppet show to ensure effective use. The puppet show, translated and voiced in Tamil with help from Myrtle Social Network, used a humorous storyline about a mischievous germ named Kirumi to teach handwashing in an entertaining and culturally resonant way. This session engaged dozens of primary school students and promoted hygiene as a core health habit. To reinforce this message visually, the team painted a vibrant mural inside the school, designed to serve as a daily reminder of cleanliness and handwashing techniques. In Attrambakkam, the WASH team initiated water quality testing in partnership with the WASH Institute and Myrtle, mapping key colonies and learning to conduct microbiological analyses under the guidance of Dr. Manikhandan. Finally, they began community-centered WATSAN (Water and Sanitation) discussions to better understand residents' needs and set a foundation for future interventions. The WASH team successfully engaged students, school staff, and local leaders in sustaining hygienic practices across both villages.
Ongoing Projects
Current and planned initiatives range from teams assessing water quality concerns (such as E. coli contamination in Abak) and pursuing NGO partnerships to evaluate and improve local pipes and borewell maintenance. At the same time, their efforts also focus on revitalizing WATSAN Committees by promoting capacity building, expanding collaborations with organizations like SEVA, and introducing interactive education modules on sanitation, waste management, and community health. By integrating infrastructure improvements with frequent educational programming and inclusive consultations, these projects strive to create sustainable solutions that respond directly to community-identified needs.
